In Honor of Teachers

On September 2, 2011 The New York Times published a thought-piece by Charles M. Blow, celebrating teachers just in time for the back-to-school season. Blow addresses Americans' perceptions of teachers, the sometimes startling statistics within the teaching profession (i.e. nearly 50 percent of new teachers leave the profession within their first five years), and acknowledges the many out-of-school factors that weigh heavily on performance, "like growing child poverty, hunger, homelessness, home and neighborhood instability, adult role-modeling and parental pressure and expectations."
