Barbershop Books....Book Buzz program aims to encourage reading among young, black boys

A barbershop might seem an unlikely place to instill a love of reading. But that's exactly what a group of local nonprofit organizations and funders are aiming to do with a new program called Barbership Books - The Book Buzz.

The idea is to stock five local barbershops with books from the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County and then encourage customers - particularly black men - to read to their children, particularly black boys, while they wait to get their hair cut. Tableau Competition

StrivePartnership recently had the opportunity to supply data for a national Tableau sponsored competition, known as the “War of TUG’s” (TUG’s is short for Tableau User Groups).  The competition saw 28 submissions from 16 user groups across the country (and globe).  The user groups’ submissions helped contextualize the education data, which is both rich and complex. Helping Young Children Build Personal Libraries

A handful of philanthropy groups are coming together to get more books in the hands of children from low-income families.

Low-income children throughout Cincinnati will soon find a new book waiting in their mailbox each month...totally free.

Seasoned early literacy programs Imagination Library and Reach Out and Read joined forces to deliver a new, age-appropriate book each month by mail to every Medicaid-eligible child under the age of five, starting at birth and at no cost to parents.
