Completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a critical step in making postsecondary education a reality for our low-income and first generation students. By alleviating concerns about paying for college, it helps students and families better prepare for and take key steps to enroll in a postsecondary education institution.
However, across the nation and our region, too few families complete the FAFSA and take advantage of the resources that can allow them to enter postsecondary education and ultimately obtain a well-paying job. A recent analysis of federal grant data by NerdWallet calculated that 47% of 2013 high school grads across the country did not fill out the Free Application. To give a regional perspective, in 2013, Ohio left $101.3 million on the table in Ohio, and in Kentucky , an estimated $40.6 million was left unclaimed.
